Know Whether Your Part D Plan Still Covers What You Take
Every fall your Part D plan mails a notice of change. Most people set it aside, do nothing, and get rolled into the same plan for another year. Then in January a refill rings up at a number nobody warned them about.
The plan did not necessarily get worse. Its covered drug list moved, or your prescriptions did. Bring both to the counter in Culver City and a pharmacist can price your actual medication list against the plan you have, and against the ones you could still move to before the window closes December 7.
What Gets Compared
Your drug list
Every prescription you take, lined up against what the plan actually covers.
What you pay
Deductible, tier, and copay figured drug by drug, not as a plan average.
Where you fill
Whether the plan treats your pharmacy as preferred, and what that costs you.
Sean Rahimi, PharmD, runs these reviews himself, and for current patients the fill history is already on the screen.
What a Review Turns Up
A drug that fell off the list
Plans drop medications between years, and the letter announcing it rarely names the one you care about in language you can find.
A quiet tier move
Same drug and same plan, shifted up a tier, which reaches you as a higher copay on a refill you have taken for years.
A price that beats the plan
On some generics a cash price or a discount program lands under the plan copay, so the card stays in your wallet for that one fill.
A prior authorization waiting to happen
When next year's plan wants approval or step therapy on something you already take, the paperwork can start with your prescriber now instead of after a rejection.
Bring these to the counter
- Your plan card, or the notice the plan mailed you.
- Every prescription you take, including anything a specialist wrote.
- Vitamins, supplements, and over the counter items you take daily.
- Your prescriber's name, since a covered alternative needs their signature.
Then the choice is yours
- Stay on the plan you have, or move to one that prices your list lower.
- Enrollment is a step you complete with Medicare or the plan, not something filed for you here.
- New coverage begins January 1, so a December decision lands on your first refill of the year.
- The counter is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
Bring your card and your medication list, and we will price the year ahead with you.
