Walk Out Knowing Your Numbers
Blood pressure and blood sugar do not announce themselves. Most people learn their number at a doctor visit booked for something else, months or years after it started drifting.
Sean Rahimi, PharmD, owns this Culver City pharmacy and works the counter, so the person who takes the reading is the person who tells you what it means.
What Happens With the Result
Measured
A reading taken at the counter while you wait.
Explained
Read against your age, your history, and your prescriptions.
Acted On
A date to recheck, or a reason to bring it to your doctor.
In Los Angeles County, 14.4% of adults have diabetes and another 40.2% test in the prediabetic range.
What a Number Alone Leaves Out
What you already take
Plenty of common medications push blood pressure and blood sugar in one direction or the other, so your reading gets weighed against your current list rather than judged on its own.
One result is not a pattern
Stress, the time of day, or a fast trip across the parking lot can each lift a single reading, which is why the recheck often matters more than the first number.
Age moves the odds
County figures put diabetes at 22.3% among adults 65 and older against 8.6% for adults 18 to 64, so the case for checking gets stronger with every decade.
Before You Stop In
- Open Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
- Bring the bottles, or a written list of everything you take including supplements.
- Sit for a few minutes first. A reading taken right after hurrying in runs high.
- Mention when you last ate if you want your blood sugar looked at.
- A screening shows you where you stand. A diagnosis comes from your doctor.
